FARMHOUSE ALES

TORONTO BEER GUIDE

Originally brewed to soothe and fortify farmhands (and provide an uncontaminated alternative to nasty water), these ales and subset saisons hail from southern Belgium and northern France. Rustic and relatively obscure until recent years, this loose and incredibly versatile style has become one of the trendiest sips around. The assertive ale yeasts used in farmhouse styles bestow the finished beer with a spicy, fruitforward character that unsurprisingly plays well with fruit – from citrus to pineapple. Black Oak Saison with orange zest (on tap and cask at some of the best beer bars) Indie Ale House/Sawdust City Takes Two To Mango (on tap and in growlers at Indie Ale House) Left Field Sunlight Park Saison with grapefruit ( on tap around town and at the brewery) Goose Island Sofie with orange zest (LCBO 331298, 765 ml/$9.95)
